Diego Maradona Needs Surgery after Dog Bite Injuries
Earlier in the year, Argentine football icon Diego Maradona required reconstructive surgery following a dog bite. Though Maradona made a full recovery, the event serves to demonstrate that even the famous can suffer the trauma of a dog bite.
Football hero Diego Maradona has undergone reconstructive surgery to repair his upper lip, following an attack by one of his family pets.
According to sources close to the star’s family, the footballer was at home playing one of his Chinese shar-Pei dogs, when the animal snapped and attacked his face. Maradona was quickly rushed to hospital where witnesses saw him ‘bleeding close to his mouth.‘ He was accompanied into surgery by his girlfriend.
Maradona’s ‘Serious’ Dog Bite Injuries
The Argentinian Manager needed ten stitches and treatment from a team of plastic surgeons. The fifteen hour operation took place at Los Arcos Clinic, the same facility that treated his drink related liver problems in 2007.
Ignacio Fabiani, a spokesperson for the Los Arcos clinic, said Maradona was discharged in ‘good condition following surgery on his upper lip.’ He is said to be stable and recoving at home.
Fernando Molina, his personal press officer, told Reuters:”He’s already at home and he’s in good spirits.”
Shar-Pei are common dogs in Argentina, and are often used as guard dogs, as well as family pets. It is not known what Diego Maradona will do to the animal that inflicted his dog bite injures, although it is unlikely to remain in the family home.
The incident is the latest in a string of health problems for the football legend who led Argentina to World Cup glory. The temperamental star has publically battled drug and alcohol addiction and eating disorders. Recently he has needed gastric band treatment to prevent his obesity causing long term medical problems.
