Dog Attacks Woman with Baby in the Street
Dog attacks on children provoke amazing acts of bravery, as a Huddersfield woman has shown.
A woman is recovering after a brutal dog attack in the street. Ms Akhtar was talking to friends and neighbours near her home, in Thornton lodge, Huddersfield. She was pushing a pram with her small baby inside.
Without provocation, a passing dog jumped up at the pram, snarling and barking. When Waheed Akhtar bent down to protect her baby, the animal bit her face, and wouldn’t let go.
26 year old Ms Akhtar bravely stood her ground to prevent her child getting hurt. But the dog did not let go. The animal, described as witnesses as an illegal pit bull terrier, dragged her to the floor. Despite neighbours hitting the dog with spades, the animal pulled Ms Akhar over a metre into the road, and did not realise it’s grip till it bit her cheek off.
Eye witnesses called the dog attack ‘brutal’ and ‘horrendous’.
When Emergency services arrived at the scene, a full scale police search was launched for the dogs owners. Two men from the Lockwood area of Huddersfield were arrested for breach of the Dangerous Dogs act. The illegal dog is believed to live opposite a local school.
Waheed was rushed to Bradford Royal infirmary, where she underwent emergency plastic surgery to restore her cheek. Her condition is stable, but she is expected to suffer from considerable trauma and long term scarring.
Dog Attacks on the Increase.
Dog attacks are on the rise. About 250000 dog bites occur each year in the UK. Latest figures from the NHS show that serious dog attacks – that is, attacks by illegal breeds, or attacks by legal breeds that result in severe injuries have risen by over 60% in the last decade.
It is not only illegal breeds like Pitbull terriers that attack humans, any dogs are capable of a vicious bite. In fact, latest research shows that sausage dogs have the highest levels of aggression – yet their small size makes them less dangerous to humans when they snap.
